About

Thank you for visiting this website. Here's a bit more about me.

I'm Czech British, being born in Prague but having spent most of my life in England. I studied Philosophy at The University of Reading where I mostly just became obsessed with student media. I did a Master's Degree at King's College London, that time focusing a bit more on the philosophy, and linguistics as well. I started an online 'open content' arts magazine and art portfolio site named Blue Jumpers in 2004, which ran until 2009 and is being reborn as an email-powered contribution system. I used to do a lot of music writing, first for student newspapers, then Artrocker, then Blue Jumpers... Then I became a 'real' journalist working for a series of local newspapers for two years. Following those years I found the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union which changed my life and turned me into a media trainer and proper website person where I had just been a life long dabbler before. I did a fair bit of freelance web stuff and then started a business called Before The Start with a pretty amazing marketer called Izzy Hussain. The strangest job I've ever done was researching cockney, street and pirate slang for a MSN Messenger addon. I love technology, especially when it talks to other technology, being pretty obsessed with MIDI, Open Sound Control, HTML and CSS standards, jQuery (I'm trying to brush up on my actual JavaScript but I'd be lying if I said I was very good) and pretty much any well written API.

I love training and inspiring young people, am working on setting up a media training charity/youth-run agency and can talk for hours about most things. I wave my hands about a fair bit and, annoyingly, sometimes forget to think everything through before I say it. Oh well. Catch me when I'm interested in something and I'm the most enthusiastic person you'll ever meet.

Though I do all this media and web stuff I'm most of all a writer. Yes, everything I do is probably procrastination from the novel, musical (titled Furniture Music, about ghosts and experimental music, coming soon... hurry up Filip it's taking ages) and poetry books I should be writing. If you ever have any writing to suggest, be it articles, reviews, poems, lyrics or plays, let me know, I'll probably get excited about it.

I play guitar, trumpet, piano, harmonica, ukulele, theremin, and lots of synthy programmy sampley stuff. I consider myself much more an experimental musician than most of the experimental musicians you hear about, not because my stuff is noisier or weirder (it's mostly not), but because much of my recording and playing is an actual experiment. Michael Nyman's Experimental Music (book), John Cage's Silence (also book), Derek Bailey's Improvisation (book...), graphical notation and actual science are hugely inspirational but I think it's something to do with who I am too as I've been doing it far longer than I've known them. From phase cancelling and one second tracks on shuffle to some of my earliest recordings that contain things like whole songs shrunk down to half a second fragments and used as a drum beat, I love trying things. My friends are probably sick of hearing of the crazy plans, most of which never lead to anything releasable even for me who releases almost everything. It's those plans and those friends who inspire pretty much everything I do though. I'm happy to do any commission (for free, usually) so if you've got something that needs soundtracking let me know. I love hip hop.

Hullo Filip
